TEST OF ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (TABE)

Welcome to the Bradford-Union Area Career Technical Center. You are about to take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). This test covers basic skills that you use in everyday life and is designed to measure achievement of basic skills commonly found in adult basic education programs. The State of Florida requires that all students enrolling in a vocational or educational program be tested on their achievement level in the basic skills of reading, mathematics, language and spelling.

:

Time - The TABE test, complete battery (Levels E, M, D and A – Forms and 10) is 164 minutes long and the Survey TABE (an abbreviated version) is 87 minutes long. The complete battery and the Survey TABE assess the following areas:

Reading (50 minutes) – This test measures basic reading skills, vocabulary, and ability to find and use information and read diagrams and charts.

Mathematics Computation (15 minutes) – This test measures ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Also included are integers, algebraic expressions, exponents and percents.

Applied Mathematics (50 minutes) – This test includes numeration, computation in context, estimation, number theory, measurements, data interpretation, geometry, pre-algebra and algebra. (You may use a calculator for this section only.)

Language (39 minutes) – This test assesses skills in the areas of language usage, mechanics, sentence formation and paragraph development.

Scheduling and Test Times - To schedule an appointment to take the TABE please call (904) 966-6769. The test is normally administered every other Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. and every Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. The test is held in Building 7. Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled time and expect to be here for three hours.

Cost - There is a $20.00 fee for the TABE if you are not enrolling at the vocational
center. This fee applies to those testing for jobs with private schools and colleges, etc. The cost of a re-test is also $20.00. You must pay the full fee even if you are only re-taking one section of the test. Please pay your fee in cash at the Administration Office, Building 1, and bring your receipt to the testing room.

Test Requirements - Please bring a picture ID and be on time.

Test Scores - After testing, your scores will be available the following day after 10:00 a.m. You may then make an appointment with a counselor to go over your test scores and enroll in a vocational, GED or Adult Basic Education program. Scores are not given over the phone.

Re-testing - The cost for re-testing is $20.00 for those applying for positions at private companies and colleges. If your test scores reflect that you are one grade level below the program or business minimum requirement in a subject area, you may re-test as early as the next testing date. If you are more than one grade level below the minimum requirement, you must go into a remediation class at the vocational center. You can then re-test with teacher approval. You must enroll for a minimum of three weeks at a cost of $.62 per period. If you choose not to remediate, you must wait six months to re-test.
